What’s your wedding style?

There are so many decisions that need to be made when planning a wedding. From the dress, to the venue, to the invitations, to the music, to the chair covers. It’s very easy to get overwhelmed and not know where to begin.

It’s also very easy to fall in love with certain pieces to incorporate in the day that on their own may be beautiful, but together with everything else simply don’t work.

This is why it’s so important to think carefully about your wedding style.

Want a 1920’s Gatsby-inspired do but have set your heart on a modern combi-van for the bridal transport?… Hate to say it but these themes might not work together in practice.

Now of course this is your day, if you’re absolutely set on something, who are we to argue otherwise. But, generally the most beautiful weddings are those where some key decisions have been made about the wedding style and this has been followed through with the choices of decor, music, styling, dresses etc.

So with that in mind, here’s some top tips for what to think about when curating your wedding style.

  • What’s the first thing that you think about when you imagine your dream wedding?
A huge party with hundreds of your friends? A small intimate group on a deserted beach? A rustic vineyard? Thinking about the size of the wedding that you’re dreaming of, the location and the general setting will then springboard your other decisions.
  • Do you have a particular theme in mind?
Are you yearning for a boho beach vibe or prefer old hollywood glam? It’s a great idea to start collecting ideas and designs that match your style on a mood board (or Pinterest is great for this) so you can start to see how all of the elements will work together.
  • What about colours?
Would you like all of your bridesmaids in the same colour or are you wanting to mix it up? … and strange as this might sound but when you’re checking out venues, make sure that if you do have a very specific colour scheme in mind it’s not going to clash with any crazy carpet patterns or wallpaper.
  • How formal are you wanting to go?
A formal multi-course sit down dinner will provide a very different vibe to a festival-esque food truck.

Ultimately, the key here is to provide some uniformity throughout the day which also has the added benefit of helping your guests know how to behave.

Guests kicking off their shoes and jumping in the pool may be totally acceptable at a laid back surf-style wedding, but is simply not going to cut it at a black tie affair where you’d prefer your guests to be fully decked out in formal evening wear.

The choice really is yours and how you, as a couple would like to present yourselves to the world. The earlier you can decide on a wedding style though, the easier you will find it is to make decisions. You will be able to discount so many things based on the fact that they simply will not gel and instead truly build your wedding into a memorable and coordinated day that your guests will remember for years to come.
